Delight in Turkish Fine Furniture
Using a Wood-Mizer LT15 to produce a symbol of Turkish hospitality.

"In Turkey, our guests often stay over for the night, and it is customary for the sofa to be converted into their bed. It’s a great solution!" Thus Erol Kanat, Wood-Mizer’s representative in Turkey, explains the popularity of the traditional Turkish sofa.

Furniture such as sofas, chairs, and matching sets are produced by the Arasdas company in Kayseri, Turkey. The company is owned by two brothers, Ismetullah and Osman Dasdemir, and their products are well known in Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and Iraq, but the most important markets for the company is the United States and Canada.

"Every day we ship three containers full of furniture to the United States – 70 pieces in each," shares Mr. Ismetullah Dasdemir. "In New Jersey we rent a 1,500 square metre warehouse, where the products are then distributed to fulfil orders by clients throughout North America."

A couple years ago, the company added a Wood-Mizer LT15 to their production process. They felt that it provided a simple and inexpensive method for producing the various wooden furniture components in-house. They did not require a machine for high production of pieces – the sawmill only runs about three hours each day – but the main consideration was the dependability and accuracy of the cut.

"The measurements must be exactly right, even in pieces only as thick as 2-2.5cm. The LT15 sawmill has been the ideal solution for our needs," shares Mr. Ismetullah. When the sawmill initially arrived at the company, Wood-Mizer’s representative, Mr. Erol Kanat, personally trained the operators, and the three men are experts on using the machine already.

The traditional Turkish sofa is a common symbol for hospitality
"We used to use an old vertical sawmill, but it really was not the practical solution. Heavy beams had to be manually lifted onto the cutting surface, and the whole equipment process was quite unsafe. With the Wood-Mizer sawmill, the work is much easier and safer as well."

In Arasdas they pay special attention to the safety of their workers, and the company is ISO 9001:2008 certified. With the demand for their products continuing to grow, the owners are considering ways to improve their production.

"We are planning to completely reorganize the production process and build a conveyor for furniture assembly. We expect that productivity will increase by 40% using the same team of 40 workers," explains Mr. Ismetullah.

It is encouraging to see such a dynamic company growing and planning for the future with an emphasis on quality products and processes in their factory.
