Interest in band sawmilling at Great Yorkshire Show
Demonstrations of sawmill technology designed to help woodland owners, farmers and contractors add value and enter new markets drew a lot of interest at the Great Yorkshire Show in the UK, which took place in July.
Organisers report that the general mood among farmer visitors was one of optimism. Having subsequently enjoyed good harvests in the region, enquiries into machinery and equipment seem justified.
Certainly the Wood-Mizer band sawmill demonstrations arranged by Martin Philips, Wood-Mizer's agent in the north of England, evinced a lot of interest. One local flooring company wants a long-bed, mid-range LT40 mill and is trying to raise finance.
Also on the stand, David Biggs, Wood-Mizer UK's general manager, explains:
"In either mobile or static versions, our band sawmills produce accurately sawn material with minimal waste. Using Wood-Mizer's blade technology, refined over 30 years, simplicity and low running costs are possible.
"The process can go further. Although not at the show, downstream conversion by Wood-Mizer's range of edgers, multirips, shingle/lapsiders and multi-head resaws adds value to the saleable lumber".
The Wood-Mizer range encompasses entry-level machines up to industrial installations designed for three-shift operation.
At the Yorkshire show, the company demonstrated the diesel-powered version of the mid-range LT40 'workhorse' sawmill, which is also available with petrol or electric power. Martin Philips comments:
"These versatile, relatively low-cost band sawmills permit a profitable response to demand for sawn timber from locally grown hardwood and softwood.
"The secondary processing equipment takes the process into a rewarding next step".
